About
My work sits between painting and textile, where thread reshapes the image. It’s a process of building, unbuilding, and finding balance within the surface.
This approach has developed over time through experimentation and practice, and through collaborations that continue to expand the way I work.
About the artist
Nicoló Lucillo Cambrai is an artist whose practice moves between painting and textile, using thread as both line and structure. Working directly onto canvas, he stitches into painted surfaces to build layered compositions that exist somewhere between image and object.
His process is slow and deliberate. Each piece is entirely hand-sewn, shaped through repetition, tension, and small, accumulative gestures. The physicality of the work remains visible, with thread introducing a tactile dimension that interrupts and extends the painted surface.
While the compositions are largely abstract, they often carry traces of familiar forms—fleeting suggestions that emerge and recede within colour and texture. This interplay creates a shifting visual experience, where the viewer’s gaze moves across layers rather than settling in one fixed point.
Originally from northern Italy, Cambrai studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna before moving to London, where his practice continues to evolve through studio exploration and collaborations such as Artiq, expanding his engagement with contemporary contexts.
